This area is where students will find nonfiction books. These books can be found on the two outer walls of the IMC, beginning by the wall of windows.
These types of books are organized by the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system. DDC numbers correspond with the subject matter they cover. There are 10 main divisions within the DDC system.
000s—General
100s—Philosophy
200s—Religion
300s—Social Science
400s—Language Arts
500s—Natural Sciences
600s—Technology
700s—Art/Sports
800s—Literature
900s—History
The DDC system allows materials to be grouped together based upon similar subject matter, known as collocation.
If you look up a nonfiction book in the catalog, it will have a DDC number followed by the first three letters of the author's last name. If a nonfiction book does not have an author, the DDC number will be followed by the first three letters of the first significant word in the title.
The call number is the series of Dewey numbers and letters that give the location of the item on the shelf. At the end of each shelving unit, you can find signs that indicate the call numbers located in each row.
Biographies- Notice biographies and autobiographies can be found near the nonfiction section; they are located on their own separate shelf. Individual biographies will always start with the number 92 followed by the first three letters of the person's last name about whom the book is written.
